In UCF's early days as Florida Technical University, President Charles Millican and his brother-in-law Norman Van Meter created a mascot that combined Florida's citrus industry with FTU's mission to train future space engineers. The result was the Citronaut, an alien-headed orange-bodied creature. It was ahead of its time - the student body quickly petitioned for a new mascot and won in 1970 when they became the Knights.
