In 1909, Howard student J.A. Mitchell envisioned the school as a hub for Black scholarship. His words, 'Howard indeed bids well to become the Mecca, toward which the eyes of our youth will instinctively turn,' still resonate today. The idea of 'The Mecca' gained new significance during the Civil Rights Movement, especially after Malcolm X's pilgrimage in 1964. Howard University has long been a guiding light for Black education, nurturing countless leaders, innovators, and artists who proudly call it their alma mater.
