Celebrate the legacy of Furman Paladins! In 1961, after years of inconsistent nicknames, the students chose the “Paladins” as the official mascot. The football team was once the Purple Hurricanes, the baseball team was the Hornets, and the track and cross country teams were the Harriers. But the basketball team's history of being called “the Paladins of the Court” in the 1930s by Scoop Latimer of the Greenville News prevailed. Since then, all teams in Furman colors have been the Paladins.
