In 1909, Howard student J.A. Mitchell envisioned the school as a hub for Black scholarship. His words, 'Howard indeed bids well to become the Mecca, toward which the eyes of our youth will instinctively turn,' hold true even today. After the Civil Rights Movement, especially after Malcolm X's pilgrimage in 1964, the 'Mecca' comparison resurfaced.
