The Minnesota Golden Gophers have a rich history! In 1858, a famous political cartoon by R.O. Sweeny led to the state getting the “Gopher State” nickname. As early as 1887, the University of Minnesota used it in their yearbook, “The Gopher Annual.” In 1926, football coach Clarence Spears officially named his team the Gophers. In the 1930s, legendary sports writer and broadcaster Halsey Hall added the “Golden” due to their gold uniforms and great football field performance. Brought to you in partnership with College Vault.
